Monday, May 11th, 2009

Collecting world coins is just one of many areas of collecting. However, just because you get serious with collecting world coins, you will still be exposed to most other areas of coin collecting. Also, one may wonder, how can I get a complete collection of world coins. Well the answer is up to you. Obviously you can’t collect every world coin, so the extent and depth of your collection is entirely up to you, as there exist many subtopics of world coins and what you consider to be such. Having a basic collection or a very in deep one depends on your particular goals and desires and what your trying to achieve with your world coin collection.

A good definition of World coins may be “coins made for governments”. It is also the area where you have the best chance to form just what you wish to include in “your” collection. Family roots, a country you visited or always hoped to visit, the 1600’s, 1700’s. As you can see, it’s your choice to include what coins you wish for your world coins. You can collect coins that circulated in North America before there was a United States or Canada. Rulers, Kings and Queens are also other ideas to get you going. Having a collection of Canadian coins for example is just that. World coin collections may contain coins only about royalty from all countries on Earth, or about a certain time period of these countries. They can be about particular releases of gold or silver coins, or about pennies only. The only limitation is your imagination.

Collecting world coins allows collectors to become more familiar with the cultures, languages and many other aspects of the Nation or Country being researched. Although obtaining a good collection of world coins is not impossible, it will present more of a challenge than collecting US coins, as there are many more collectors, dealers and traders of US coins. So, try to keep this fact in mind when pursuing your coin topic of interest. Always a good idea, no, it really is a must, to get a good coin guide or book just to familiarize your self with all the possibilities that exist within this hobby.

I must say though that coin collecting is a lot like life in that when I matured, really matured, my interests and open mindedness concerning collecting expanded, as time went by. These constant changes in my attitude, sometimes made it very difficult for me to remain focused on my current project, as it seemed like new interests were constantly pulling me in other directions to pursue. However, to avoid the constant nagging of this pull, I had to reassess and reassert my goals and intentions I first decided upon, and when I could no longer confirm these objectives, well, it was definitely time to pursue other interests. It was a natural process and one I didn’t resent.

Having more than one collection is also pretty well guaranteed when just starting out, unless of course you are stead fast with your area of interest. Having one or more collections will allow you to have a good supply of trading coins to deal with. Important pennies are just one of the many individual collections you may trade with, as some of these pennies are quite valuable and rare, and are desired by many a collector.
