get those old english wipes they are sweet iam pretty sure they make an antique style. and it makes the finish more shinny also they make polish.

I would use the Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the piece, then good furniture polish such as Guardsman or Old English to bring the finish back.

Clean with Dawn & water to remove the water-soluble dirt (most of it).
Clean with naphtha to remove the hydrocarbon-soluble dirt & waxes.
Then apply shellac, polish (other than Pledge), or furniture wax.
If the finish is in sound shape, this will do wonders.
